PLA filament is one of the standard materials used in consumer 3D printing (the other being ABS). It is a rigid plastic that has a relatively low melting point, which allows the printed layers to adhere together for a stronger bond. With supplemental cooling, finer details and sharper corners can be achieved. PLA also has fewer issues with warping and cracking, ideal for beginners and hobbyists. A heated platform is not required, but it does help the first print layers to stick (Blue Painters Tape is also a plus).
